The Navajo people (or Diné) believe that when a baby is born, it is between two worlds, that of the holy people and the earth people.  When a baby laughs for the first time is is believed to be a sign that the soul has entered the baby and he is ready to join the earth people. 

The person who witnessed or made the baby laugh is expected to host a A’wéé Chi'deedloh ("The Baby Laughed") party.  At the party the baby gives (with help!) a piece of rock salt to each of the guests.  This is believed to renew the generosity of the guest as well as give the baby a life of generosity and gratitude.
